Jim Martin is an accomplished aviator who has been flying for more than 23 years. As a First Officer flying the Boeing 777 for United Airlines, Jim has amassed more than 8,000 (6000 air carrier and 2000 G/A) hours in his career so far.

Jim's flying experience began at the age of 12 when he first began receiving lessons from his father. On his 16th birthday, he conducted his first solo in a CITALBRIA, and went on to obtain his Private Pilots License at the age of 17.

By 18 years old, being hooked on flying, he began flying on an aerobatic flight team called Lima Lima (www.limalima.com) which was co-founded by his father. At this point he had earned his Commercial Pilots License. He continues to fly with Lima Lima performing at air shows across the country, conducting very difficult maneuvers in the signature T-34 aircraft.

In 1994, Jim was fortunate enough to land an Internship with United Airlines in the O'hare flight office, his introduction to the airline business.

In 1995, he graduated from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University with a B.S. degree in Maintenance and Flight Operations – a 5 year program. His education, experience and training served him well with him being offered a position at United Airlines as a Flight Officer just 2 months after graduating.

Over the years he has continued to excel and take advantage of opportunities with United starting out as a Flight Engineer DC-10 (2yrs)and going on to First Officer on the B-737-300 (1 yr), First Officer on the B-757/B767 (2yrs), Captain on the B737-300 (2 yrs), First Officer on the B-757/767 (2yrs), First Officer on the B777-200 (2yrs).

Jim also has his Certified Flight Instructors License (CFI) and his A&P License. He is a highly accomplished and talented pilot that has truly worked hard to get to where he is.

In his spare time, he is an avid remote controlled aircraft designer, builder and flyer, and has designed scale models of the B-1, B777, XB-70 and many others.

Jim’s career path is just one example of how you might achieve your goal of becoming and airline pilot.
